A free wedding website costs nothing in rands and something in evenings: you pick a template, write every word, and chase every RSVP yourself. A custom done-for-you website in South Africa costs roughly R2,000 to R8,000, with your story written for you and the design built around your wedding. Free is right for some couples. Custom is right for others. Here is how to tell which one you are.
We build custom wedding websites, so you know where we stand. We also planned our own wedding, and we've watched enough couples wrestle with both options to know that free is sometimes the right call. This guide gives you the pros and cons of each, what they cost in rands, and an honest answer to when custom is worth the money.
What a free wedding website gives you
Free builders are honest offers: R0, a set of templates, and your own time. Some South African wedding planning platforms include one, and international builders like Zola and Wix work here too. Some free plans have limits, such as a cap on guests or a paid custom domain, so check before you build.
Where free wins
- It costs R0. Money that stays in the budget for the things your guests will eat, drink, and dance to.
- It's live tonight. Sign up, pick a template, fill in the date and the venue, and share the link before bed.
- Every word is yours. You write it, you change it, and you never wait on anyone.
- Some come with planning tools. Guest lists, checklists, and budget trackers in the same login.
- Enough for a small wedding. If you need a date, an address, and a way for guests to say yes, a template does that.
What free costs you
- Your evenings. Setup, design decisions, and writing take hours, and those hours come after work.
- The template look. Thousands of couples use the same layouts. Your guests may have seen yours at another wedding.
- You write your own story. Into a text box, usually late, usually after deleting three versions.
- You chase the RSVPs. The form collects the yes. Everything else still lands on your phone.
- Free has edges. Guest limits, paid custom domains, and features that only appear once you pay.
- Nobody to call. When the form breaks the week before the wedding, the help centre is the help.
Words we've heard from our clients:
"My day time gets so hectic and night time is the only time I get through all my wedding 'to-do's'"
"I wanted to do everything last night but only got home late after work. Tonight I will do everything."
"I searched for websites high and low that I can do myself and none of them actually have everything that I wanted."
"I was annoyed that there weren't nicer fonts, and annoyed that I can't change anything to be a bit more personal, and then I was like, no, screw this, there must be another way."
What a custom done-for-you website gives you
A custom website is built for one wedding: yours. A studio takes your story, your photos, and your colours, and hands back a finished link. In South Africa, that generally costs a few thousand rand.
Where custom wins
- It's done for you. One call, and the writing, the design, and the build happen without you.
- Your story, written properly. Someone listens to how you met and writes it the way you'd tell it to a friend.
- It feels like your wedding. The design starts from your colours, your venue, and the feeling you want in the room, not from a layout thousands of couples share.
- The invitation matches. When the same studio designs the invitation and the website, a guest taps from one to the other and lands in the same wedding.
- RSVPs in one place. Attendance, dietary requirements, and questions arrive organised, so the week before the wedding stays quiet.
- Someone to message. When something needs changing, you ask a person, and it gets done.
- One less thing. The website comes off your list the day you book it.
What custom costs you
- Money. A few thousand rand against R0. That is a real line in a wedding budget.
- A short wait. You get a draft to review instead of a page you can publish tonight.
- A little homework. The studio needs your details, your photos, and one conversation to build from.
- Changes go through the studio. You review and approve rather than edit the page yourself. At WedlySite two full review rounds are included, and couples still apologise for using them. You don't have to.
Words we've heard from our clients:
"This was the first one that was like, it's everything that I wanted and I don't have to do it myself."
"I can't tell you how much stress this saved us and you guys did the most beautiful job."
"The main change is that we would prefer the website to be in Afrikaans, as it feels much more like us as a couple."
"I am getting so many people that love the website! Everyone says is so beautiful!"
Free vs custom, side by side
| What matters | Free builder | Custom done-for-you |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | R0 | Roughly R2,000 to R8,000 |
| Your time | Hours of evenings | One call and a review |
| Design | A template shared by thousands | Built around your wedding |
| Your story | You write it | Written for you |
| Invitations | Made elsewhere, rarely match | Designed to match the website |
| RSVP | A form, then your phone | Replies and dietary needs in one place |
| Changes | You edit anything, any time | You approve, the studio edits |
| Live | Tonight | After a draft and your review |
| Support | A help centre | A person on WhatsApp |
| Best for | Small, simple, or short-notice weddings | Couples who want it to feel like them |
When free is the right call
Go free, and don't feel bad about it, if most of these are true:
- Your guest list is small, say 40 people or fewer, and most of them are already in one WhatsApp group.
- The wedding is weeks away, not months.
- You need a date, an address, and a yes or a no. Nothing more.
- You enjoy building things and have the evenings to spare.
- The budget is genuinely tight, and R2,997 would come out of the food or the photographer.
In that case, pick a clean template, keep the words short, and send the link with a beautiful picture invitation. Our guide to digital wedding invitations in South Africa covers the free options for that side too.
When custom is worth it
Custom is worth it when the website has to do more than inform. When it has to feel like the two of you.
Your guests won't name it, but they'll feel it. The invitation opens, the website follows in the same colours and the same voice, and before anyone has read the venue details they already know what kind of wedding this is. That feeling is the thing a template can't give you, because a template has to work for everyone.
It's also worth it when you're already stretched. Most couples plan at night, around work, with a phone that never stops. A custom website takes one whole job off that list. You talk for an hour, you review a draft, and it's done. For a bride who is already carrying the venue, the dress, the seating, and the family politics, one less thing is not a small thing.
And it's worth it when you've tried free and it didn't feel right. If you've spent an evening in a template editor and closed the laptop thinking "that's not us", you have your answer already.
Once you've decided on custom, our guide to choosing a wedding website designer covers the 12 questions to ask before you pay a deposit.
Two websites, two feelings
Same studio, same price, two different weddings. The first is an Afrikaans website for a Karoo wedding: olive linen embroidered with proteas and sunbirds, a countdown stitched in gold, and an RSVP that knows each guest by name. The second is painted in oils, cream and wax-red, two hands reaching across the canvas and a wax seal to open. Neither would work as a template, because neither is trying to suit anyone else.

What it costs in rands
| Option | Price, September 2026 |
|---|---|
| Free builder, some with a guest limit | R0 |
| Budget one-page invite site, no RSVP system | Under R2,000 |
| Custom done-for-you studio | Roughly R2,000 to R8,000 |
These are general 2026 ranges, and our wedding website cost guide covers every price level in more detail. At WedlySite, The Whole Story is a flat R2,997, and The Love Letter, with your invitations and save the dates, is R3,697. Every price sits on our pricing page, with a calculator that builds your exact quote.
Two costs hide outside the table. A free site costs evenings. A custom site costs a deposit up front: at WedlySite, 50% to start and the balance before the site goes live. Neither is wrong. They're just different currencies.
So which one is right for you?
If the website only needs to inform, and you have the time, go free. If it needs to feel like you, and your time is the thing you don't have, go custom. Most couples know which sentence is theirs by the end of it.
WedlySite builds custom done-for-you wedding websites for South African couples for a flat R2,997: your story written from one call, the wax-seal envelope opening, RSVP with dietary requirements and guest questions, up to 10 photos woven into the design, and a year of hosting. You talk. We write, design, and build. You share one link.
We're Emma and Juan, and we built WedlySite while planning our own wedding. Emma designs the stationery, and Juan builds the websites. If you'd rather see the numbers first, the quote calculator takes about 90 seconds. If you'd rather talk, start your story.
Quick answers
Is a free wedding website good enough?
For a small, simple wedding, yes. A free builder gives you a date, an address, and an RSVP form. It falls short when you want the website to feel like your wedding, to match your invitation, or to take the admin off your hands.
How much does a custom wedding website cost in South Africa?
Custom done-for-you wedding websites in South Africa generally cost roughly R2,000 to R8,000 in 2026. At WedlySite, The Whole Story is a flat R2,997, with your story written for you, RSVP, and a year of hosting included.
Can I customise a free wedding website template?
Within limits. Free builders let you change colours, choose fonts from a set list, and add photos, but the layout stays the template's. The words are yours to write, and the RSVP replies still need chasing.
How long does a custom wedding website take?
At WedlySite your first draft arrives within days of your call, and two full review rounds are included so every detail feels like you. Most websites go live within a few weeks, and we always work around your wedding date.
What is the difference between a template and a custom wedding website?
A template is a layout shared by thousands of couples, with your details filled in. A custom website is designed and written for one wedding, starting from your colours, your venue, your invitation, and your story.
Do custom wedding websites include RSVP?
Yes. At WedlySite guests RSVP on the site with dietary requirements and any questions, and every response lands in one organised place. No WhatsApp chaos, no spreadsheet to build.
